Many of our students are working professionals in the aviation industry with ever changing schedules and geographical bases. Therefore, we have tailored the programme with a distance learning option.

Accredited Programme

The programmes at The Da Vinci Institute for Technology Management are accredited by the Council on Higher Education and offers Certificates, Diplomas, Masters and PhD qualifications in the Management of Technology and Innovation and Bachelor of Commerce in Business Management.

The Programme

Being the most connected country in Africa via air transportation and with a total of 472 000 local jobs supported by aviation, IATA reported at a October 2019 symposium that air transport contributed US$9.4 billion in Gross Value Added to South Africa’s gross domestic product (GDP). 

The Bachelor of Commerce in Business Management with the elective stream: Aviation management is designed for individuals who want to gain a deeper understanding of the aviation industry as well as take responsibility for their career in using education as a tool.

This qualification delivered in association with The da Vinci Institute of Technology Management is a registered NQF level 7 degree, allowing students to take advantage of distance learning by completing the degree online. This will allow aviation’s key players to improve their knowledge of the aviation industry and business management, allowing you to stand out for key roles whether they be operational or at an executive level.     Aviation Management 1A: Introduction to Aviation Management

    Introduction to Aviation Management provides a broad foundational knowledge of the aviation industry. An overview is provided of the role and function of world aviation organisations, the aviation value chain within the aviation management environment, and the demands of current affairs in aviation.

    Aviation Management 1B: Introduction to Aviation Regulatory Environment

    Introduction to Aviation Regulatory Environment provides an overview of the legislation governing the aviation industry, as laid down by aviation regulators to ensure competent and effective aviation operations in a complex aviation environment.

  • Year 2

    Aviation Management 2A: Airline Management and Economics

    Airline Management and Economics provides a knowledge and understanding of an integrated airline operations centre. Topics such as airline operations management, crew resources management (CRM) and aircraft management are covered. The roles and functions of the three major sectors in aviation (airlines, airports, and air traffic) are studied, including the maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) role in aeronautical industry. Airline Economics provides a knowledge and understanding of the interrelated nature of air transport and other sectors of an aviation economy, including airline alliances, aircraft manufacturing and low-cost carrier (LCC) models.

    Aviation Management 2B: SHREQ Management in Aviation

    SHREQ Management in Aviation provides a knowledge and understanding of the elements inherent in aviation safety, health, risk, environment, and quality (SHREQ) accountability, compliance, and control. The role of visible felt leadership (VFL) in the SHREQ context is taught and an understanding of organisational maturity levels in SHREQ subjects is acquired.

    Aviation Management 2C: Operations Optimisation through Human Factors

    Operations Optimisation through Human Factors teaches the fundamental concepts of human factors in aviation. Human-factor knowledge in aviation is used to optimise the fit between people and the systems within which they work to improve safety and performance.

    A knowledge and understanding is acquired of the difficulty faced by aviation role-players entrenching human-factor values in aviation organisations, and the impact of human factors on the safety efficiency of aviation operations.

  • Year 3

    Aviation Management 3A: Future Trends in Aviation 

    The module Future Trends in Aviation focuses on application of change management requirements in response to the drivers of change in aviation, which are in turn influenced by the trends in the global aviation industry, future scenarios of aviation and the understanding of the rising collaborative economy in aviation.

    Knowledge and understanding are acquired of the difficulty faced by aviation role-players entrenching changes in aviation organisations, and the impact of collaboration efficiency of aviation operations.

    Aviation Management 3B: Integrated Aviation Management System

    The module Integrated Aviation Management System focuses on the application and integration of interrelated essential structures, inherent management and support processes and the predominant systems required to run a successful aviation operation.

    Knowledge and understanding are acquired of the core IAMS philosophies and supporting mechanisms for aviation role-players entrenched in dynamic changes in aviation organisations, and the emergence (advent) of collaboration in aviation industry.

    Aviation Management 3C: Strategic Marketing in Aviation

    Strategic marketing in Aviation deals with the application of marketing scenarios and strategies in global economies to achieve competitive aviation operations in aviation market.

    Aspects such as cost base and revenue generation strategies, principles of product development and differentiation in aviation as well as market segmentation in aviation are learnt.

  • Mode 2 learning

    An experiential learning approach will be followed throughout the learning process. This implies that the programme is:

    • Facilitated and not taught, with an emphasis on self-discovery derived through several practical activities.
    • Followed by practical application, building on what has been discovered.
    • Learning from each other’s experiences, which will enrich the interpretation of the concepts addressed in this module.

    Result in the ability to apply the workshop content in the workplace.

  • Entry Requirements

    A Grade 12 is required for the BCom Programmes as a requirement by the Department of Higher Education.
